Addition Reaction

Addition Reactions:

The reactions in which a reagent completely adds to a reactant without the removal of small molecules are called additions. E.g. addition of hydrogen (hydrogenation) in the presence of catalysts like palladium or nickel, to unsaturated hydrocarbons yields saturated hydrocarbons. The reaction shown is commonly used in the hydrogenation of vegetable oils(that are unsaturated compounds) using a nickel catalyst.

In some molecules the reaction of addition occur rapidly. For eg; adding either chlorine or bromine to alkene. Likewise HCl, HBr etc. also add rapidly across the double bond.
